Hello and Willkommen

I'm an American student studying abroad for a semester at Justus Liebig Universität in Gießen, Germany. In this blog, I will be documenting my time here.

  1. I'm really happy you're doing this blog. :) I'm a freshman in high school, but I really want to go to Germany for school and possibly live there :) I really wanted to apply for Justus Liebig Universitaet in Giessen for their vet program which I heard is really good. How do you like it in Giessen? :)

  2. Great! I'm glad you're reading.
Have you ever been to Germany before, or just think that it's somewhere you would like to go, based on what you've learned about in school? I ask because if you haven't been to Germany before and then had to go to school there for 6 years, then you risk being not-so-pleasantly surprised if things aren't as you imagined. Certainly that was the case for me. I don't want to sound like a downer or discourage you in any way, but frankly, for me, Germany is an ok place to maybe visit for a few days--see the sights, but I think if I had to live here for an extended period of time, I'd wind up wanting to shooting myself, what with the bureaucratic nightmares and depressing weather and all. At least, that's how I feel about Germany so far. But who knows? Maybe I'll miss it when I go back to the US.

Anyway, that's just my own personal opinion. There are probably people who love living in Germany. So I think it's a matter of personal taste. Whether you can stand going for months on end without seeing the sky, whether you don't mind if it rains 80% of your days here, whether you don't mind temperatures in the 40s and 50s in May, whether you don't mind putting up with jerk government officials, whether you're willing to put up with all the paperwork you'll have to fill out as a non-EU citizen trying to live in Germany...

So my advice is if you really think you want to go to Giessen, then go for it. If you wind up hating it, you can always transfer. And since education is so cheap in Germany, it's not like you would lose a ton of money if you wound up having to take that option.

As to the specific town of Giessen, it's not exactly the prettiest town in Germany. But at the same time, I don't think it's half as ugly as all the residents seem to think it is. You can decide for yourself; I have pictures here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=199397&id=679146453&l=f528c36f2b

And once again, thank you for reading!
